Information for Service Providers
The Opportunity
Are you looking for ways to help increase participation among low-income students in your afterschool programs? Is cost a frequent barrier to student participation? Minnesota Afterschool Advance (MAA) is your solution!
MAA helps families utilize the Minnesota K-12 Education Credit (the “Tax Credit”), which can give them up to $1,500 per child to spend on qualified afterschool program expenses, giving families the ability to pay for programs like yours.
Qualified Service Providers
The Tax Credit can be used to cover:
fees paid for individual instruction, such as tutoring and music lessons,
the instructional portion of fees and tuition paid for out-of-school time programs or camps that are primarily academic in nature or related to the fine and performing arts. Examples include science exploration courses, language skills courses, academic summer camp, painting and drawing classes, and band camp (non-instructional expenses like travel or room and board are not eligible expenses), or
driver’s education (both classroom and behind-the-wheel).
These programs must be taught by a “qualified instructor.” To be a qualified instructor, the person must meet one of the following requirements:
be a Minnesota licensed teacher,
be directly supervised by a Minnesota licensed teacher,
have passed a teacher competency test,
teach in an accredited private school,
have at least a baccalaureate (bachelor’s) degree (the subject you teach need not have any relation to your academic training), or
be a member of the Minnesota Music Teachers Association.
