Activity Description 

Come have a fantastic week with other students who are excited about viola and want to make music together! This workshop is for high school and advanced middle school violists who want to take their playing to the next level. Students will get an opportunity to play in large and small viola ensembles, have private lessons, and perform at the final concert. Students will also learn how to practice as effectively and efficiently as possible, how to warm up well, and how to prevent injury while playing.

Shell Lake Trumpet Workshop with Robert Baca

Activity Description 

This course gives the intermediate to advanced trumpet student, performer, and pedagogue the opportunity to play and discuss trumpet all day and every day for a week with Robert Baca. All attributes needed to build musicality and "chops" will be discussed along with performance applications for orchestra, concert band, and jazz ensemble. Camp content will include private lessons, group study, and trumpet ensemble performance. Emphasis will be placed on fixing challenges faced by all participants. This course is an excellent opportunity for pedagogues who do not play the trumpet to observe solutions given for the many trumpet challenges students face. This camp provides multiple practical and motivational ideas that students can take back to their schools!

Activity Description 

The Shell Lake Arts Center in partnership with Yamaha is proud to present Eugene Rousseau Saxophone Workshop™ with Dr. Preston Duncan, Director. You will receive instruction from a team of top performers and gifted educators. This program is designed to meet the needs of participants from various backgrounds. Each day is structured to comprise a series of events and classes, including saxophone ensemble, in which all enrolled will play. There will be sessions devoted to saxophone literature, and to the interpretation of music. The performance in class of solos and chamber music is both welcomed and encouraged. In addition, a wide range of materials prepared by the instructors will be given to each person enrolled. Class sessions each day are planned to cover virtually every aspect of saxophone pedagogy, including:

Activity Description 

No show choir experience is required to attend this outrageously fun camp! The Show Choir Camp provides an outstanding opportunity for you to gain experience in this genre. By working with professionals, you can develop greater musicianship, proper use of breath support, phrasing, interpretation, postures, stage presence, and the other disciplines needed in a show choir. The Show Choir Camp is appropriate for all abilities.

You will enjoy singing and dancing to the song of today's most exciting recording artists. We will also include a ballad and an up-tempo selection from the Class A WSMA Show Choir List.

No experience necessary to attend the drumline camp – bring a great attitude and have fun drumming!  All equipment, instruments, sticks & mallets, and music will be provided!  Whether you’re marching in a competitive line or don’t have experience at all, this camp is for you.  We will give you all the information needed to play in a drumline, from technique to marching with the instruments.  Open to all levels and abilities - we will cover every aspect of being a part of a marching drumline broken down into sections of snares, quads/tenors, bass drums and cymbals.  Faculty has a myriad of marching experience as well as teaching experience at all levels.  Join us and have a great time learning about the marching percussion arts!

Take your piano-playing skills to the next level!  Pianists will receive individualized and class instruction daily, with a focus on both solo and collaborative playing. In addition to lessons, classes will examine topics such as piano technique, sight-reading, accompaniment, efficient practice methods, keyboard theory, and piano literature. Each pianist will have the opportunity to perform solo pieces.

Activity Description 

Concert Band Camp at Shell Lake Arts Center is wildly popular!  Join us for the musical fun and growth that has attracted over 100 students to camp each summer.  Come for one or both camp sessions!  Students completing grades 6-12 work side-by-side mentoring, performing and learning about a variety of musical concepts.   Classes offered for all students may include, but are not limited to theory, history, improvisation, conducting, and even polka bands.   There is a middle-level band and a high-school level band.  Chamber ensembles will be offered as well as ensembles like garage band percussion.  Students love to come back each year and continue to learn and grow! 

Here are just some of the elective offerings that will be featured at camp this year (subject to change):

World Music, Body Percussion, Composition, Theory (7 Levels!), Music History, Improvisation, Conducting, Chamber Music, Polka Band, Jazz Band, International Music Selection

Activity Description

Come learn with the professional recording engineer Jake Carlson in the Shell Lake Arts Center Recording Studio this summer! Music production camp is a week of hands-on music production and audio engineering study! Students will learn both creative and technical skills beneficial to arranging, producing and recording using industry standard computer software. Taught by industry professionals, this course covers the basics of working in a studio environment in an exciting way that enables students to create their own original art as well as capture the sounds of others. No previous experience needed! At the end of the program, students will leave with a CD and an archived copy of the recordings they made while at camp. 

Prerequisites:  Level 2 is designed for campers who have attended the Music Production Camp before or first-time campers that already have a basic understanding of music production and Pro Tools software. Campers will learn more advanced production techniques as well as advanced software workflow.

Students will learn:

Recording Tools and Software: Students will learn about recording software, MIDI devices (controllers used to input musical data) and audio interfaces (the process of recording audio and manipulating it within the computer.) In a nutshell, this will show students what tools are needed to create original musical content using a computer.

Location Recording: Students will learn how to capture sound in a live setting. This could be anything from recording a single instrument to recording an entire ensemble performance using multiple microphones and a computer. The recordings that students gather will then be edited and mixed using recording software. 

Students will need to bring: 1 USB flash drive or hard drive with a minimum of 64GB of storage.  All other equipment provided!

Activity Description

Trombone Workshop is an opportunity for high school and advanced middle school students to play and study trombone for a week with professional trombonists Dr. Phil Ostrander and Dr. John Tranter.  Trombone students will get the chance to play in large and small trombone ensembles, study privately and perform together in a final concert.  Students will have an opportunity to study either tenor or bass trombone.  We will also play and study chamber music, jazz improvisation and orchestral performance.  Challenge Dr. Tranter in table tennis in your free time!  "Slide" into Shell Lake this summer with "Trombone Workshop!"

Jason McLean, professional musician and guitar & bass instructor will provide an exciting learning environment for guitarists of all abilities. Students will be exposed to all styles and techniques of electric and acoustic guitar and bass, and they will be able to choose an area of focus in small groups. Ability to sight-read music not required. Note reading and music theory will be areas of study during the workshop. A week of presentations and performances by faculty and guest clinicians will conclude with a very special student concert.

**New for 2019!!** Your unforgettable week-long drumming experience awaits at this brand new camp for 2019!  Find your inspiration as you work alongside other drummers overcoming challenges and reaching new milestones in this encouraging environment.  Students will work with a professional drummer to learn the proper techniques, gain skills that they can use for the rest of their life, build confidence and grow as musicians.

St. Olaf Music Academy

Activity Description

St. Olaf Music Academy is designed for high school students from around the nation for an intense week of music-making under the direction of St. Olaf College’s acclaimed music faculty.

Your days will be filled with classes, lessons, and rehearsals, followed by evening faculty recitals, students performances, and social and recreational activities directed by St. Olaf music students that include participants from the other academies.  The final concert will be streamed online.

You will return home with new skills, new energy, new friends, and a heightened commitment to music.
